My family pooled their money and gifted me with $200 for the art supply store! SO I went and spent is last Friday! In case you were wondering what $200 in art supplies looks like; it looks like this.
But at least I have some PRETTY pastel acrylics now. The three cheap tubes are for mixing with better quality acrylics. The brushes are “multi-media” and promise to work with acrylics (but also they were cheap… your girl can’t afford sable hair). Two pads of paper and some refills for my pocket brush pen.
Sables would be wasted on acrylics anyway. Synthetic brushes are fine. Super cheap ones can be ok... but might not lay the paint down as you’d like and might shed hairs... but otherwise should get the job done!
So far I have only bought synthetic brushes labeled for acrylics so I think I have an OK range so far. I remember back in college buying a boar hair oil brush that was THE WORST. The bristles snapped and I had this useless snubby brush! So far the Golden acrylics are really nice! I broke my pretty pastels the other day and they are great. I have quite a mish-mash. Usually I pick up whatever is cheap on Jerry's Artarama!
I love Jerry’s! They have almost everything you could want. And decent prices... better than brick&mortar anyway.
Boar type bristles are better for loose oils on canvas. For fine work in oils or acrylic most use small, soft short-handled brushes. I like a springy brush for watercolor detail. And for acrylics. Slightly softer rounds and flats for oil. I try not to use canvas unless I’ve gessoed and sanded it so it’s smoother.
I do like to support my local art supply store- but yeah- Jerry's can't be neat for prices! I just ordered a bunch more stuff! I wish I could still do oil but I can't afford to retool and I don't have space for it and i have to use non-toxic materials if I want to work around my birds. But I am making myself learn acrylics! It's kind of slow going. I only have 2 completed works (they are on my ko-fi) and this will be my 3rd! (I'm posting process shots soon)
Art supplies have gotten prettier since I was a college student. Those cheapo acrylic tubes are very slick, and I love that abstract expressionist action going on on the cover of that pad. Looking forward to seeing what you make with them!
Already broke out the cheapo acrylics! They mix fine with everything but they are really transparent otherwise. But the Golden acrylics are really nice!
