People can make a living from writing, but usually they have some sort of day job and start publishing and figure out when they are beginning to make enough to quit their day jobs. --And as you know, it's not easy and can have its up and downs.

Opaque Reds--are usually expensive, like Cadmiums, although there are some hues that are closer to opaque. The more violet colored reds are usually not very opaque. There is probably some info somewhere about which colors for which brands are more opaque.

Not sure about the career advice. I'm pretty clueless, myself!

Yeah. I guess I have ONE last hope. Then I have to rethink EVERYTHING.

Haha- reds suck! I am stuck with the reds I have. But it looks OK. It's not great. But it's frustrating. I also couldn't get a good blend from the purple to red. I DID use alizarine crimson because I didn't want it to be really bright.

Yeah, reds are tough... Alizarin Crimson is a great color, but it's definitely translucent and not opaque. Expensive paints have more ingredients causing the actual hue in them, too. But red... the expensive one is Cadmium Red--but it's more of an orange red. Violets tend not to be translucent, too. Basically, White is the most opaque--but it messes with the intensity of red. Earth colors are opaque-ish, but also aren't what you need for a good red. Companies try very hard to make decent red colors--but even if you can buy what you want, it's not easy to find the right reds! There are some less-expensive reds, but tend to be more bright red like cadmium-wannabees, or towards orange, like scarlet.

The gem tones tend to be more transparent--purples, peacock blues, deep blue-green/emerald, magenta, etc. The white of the ground showing through helps brighten them up, but if you add white, it tends to make them too pastel.

Yeah, I think next time I'll paint white under the red. It got darker because I wanted to try that watercolor technique of putting a light wash color down on the surface so that there wouldn't be any white showing through the paint. I used a light brown mixed with medium and thinned with water. And while I like the over all effect when I went with red for the bottom of the robe it didn't do me any favors.

Good to see you working. And NO, you are not quitting. Success is fluid, it comes and goes. Furthermore, I don't let success define me. I let success FIND me. I pitched two different series to Image. Both got rejected. So, I'm doing a kickstarter. I don't need validation from a publisher to actually WANT to do it. I want to. I will. I had to get the strength to do it (and I'll still need to fight to do it), but screw it... I'm gonna do it! Hahah! I hope you find your strength, too.... whatever and whenever it can be found. But if the search stops it will never be found.

I'm trying. It's been hit or miss since my last rejection letter. It's just been a long time and a lot of failures and I feel like I'm reaching a breaking point at last. But that might not be true. I guess, the problem with books is getting people to read them and getting them to people TO read.

BUT good luck with the Kickstarter! If you need any help hit me up! I don't how I could help... but I'll try!
