AI Can't Draw But A.I. can
I found this cartoon on Pinterest and it made me laugh.
I mean, this is true and it stings! LOL! My hands are mediocre at the best of times, bad the rest. I also can’t do all the fancy lighting tricks that AI has stolen from digital artists who can do the fancy light effects. SO in a lot of ways AI art is better than a lot of artists. It’s better than I am! And it can sometimes do hands! I also feel slightly better stealing AI art off the internet for my games than I feel stealing real art off the internet. Though for my paid games I usually get stock art since I’m running Vampire I can use free stock art photos pf people for the NPCs. Lately I’ve been collecting monsters form Art Station for the Steinhardt’s game that starts on Sunday. But the ethics of everything is so muddy. I’m not streaming the games, I’m not using AI art for promotion or merch or marketing. It’s just for the players to look at as NPCs.
One thing I’d sort of like to do, is trace AI art and make watercolor paintings out of it. I can definitely see how for a REAL human artists AI could help get color palettes and compositions down before making the actual painting. But does copying AI art cheapen human art? Can it be another tool? Or is just for tools to make “art” and cash in? Also- could I get AI to draw comics for me? I would write them of course… I just miss making comics so much! I wanted to make comics so badly and it all failed, I just need something that can draw for me.
For anyone wondering, I turned to writing prose after I couldn’t get any artists to collaborate with me anymore and HAD to give up on all hope of writing comics. But then I failed at that too.
In other art complains: HOW do people get smooth paintings?? Smooth flat paint and sharp lines like I see on Pinterest!?!? HOW?? Can you ink acrylics? I mean, I know you sort of can, but it’s tough and I feel like it’s cheating. Just like I feel like the Posca paint pens are cheating. Also I see tutorials of artists making perfect lines with paint brushes and I CANNOT. No matter how much I try or practice everything I do is sloppy and blobby :( That’s why I ink everything I can. It’s the only hope I have of even a mediocre line. I suppose the REAL answer is try to get back into digital art and REALLY learn the new programs. I also can’t master contrast. So much colorful work out there and it’s like I’m still scared of bringing in contrasting colors and playing with them. I just wasted all this time in art school and now I’m poor.
Anyway, here’s some bad marker art! It’s pretty damn terrible. And shame on me for ruining a cute sketch that would have made an adorable watercolor. I need to get back into watercolor. I also keep remembering and forgetting that I wanted to draw a Lenormand deck! Fear and doubt and the conviction I will fail keep me doing a lot more.
I’m not going to try to finish this. It went off the rails. I was t rying to do a darker skintone this time and it just turned into a mess. I would have been better just coloring the skin a solid color and accenting with colored pencil. Also I want to piont out that I can do a good job on brown skintones in watercolor. Though I have to say it’s hard to find browns I like and it’s tough to mix browns I like. There juat aren’t enough good brown watercolors. I’m also not AMAZING but I’m passable OK.
See? it was cute. Another thing that went wrong was, the sweater vest started out pale pink and when I tried to shade it with darker pinks they turned ORANGE!!! So I had to recolor the sweater yellow and then the oranges were too dark! ARG! ALso I decided to see if the Starthmore Vision sketchbook would be good for marker. It’s… mediocre. It saturates quickly and bleeds terribly. The blends are OK though. Particularly wet on wet. But it’s not worth it! Vision sketchbooks are Starthmore’s worst product by far and I still have SO MANY.
This third little marker piece isn’t the abomination the other one it but it’s not great
I posted pictures because neither of these are worthy of the trouble of scanning them in. I have been looking at books of color palettes as well, it would be nice to have something like this would be nice 200 Color Palettes although it would be nice if there were more geared towards traditional art. There are also dozens and dozens of books for color mixing recipes which I admit I ignore. I was also looking at Schmincke Horadam granulating watercolors and they are $20 a tube!! It’s a large tube admittedly but damn! I just thought it’d be cool for texture!
Welcome to February!!! How are you all doing? Say hi in the comments if you want! And as always- PLEASE share on whatever is left of social media!
